This UNESCO World Heritage site fascinates visitors with its intricate carvings, stunning vistas, and deep historical significance. Not only does it make visitors admire its artistically carved architecture, Preah Vihear Temple is also a typical example of the art and devotion of the Khmer people as a sacred place dedicated to the Indian Hindu god Shiva.

I. Why is the Temple of Preah Vihear important?

Preah Vihear Temple is an outstanding masterpiece of Khmer architecture in terms of planning, decoration and connection with the majestic landscape and environment.

Historically, the temple has been around for more than 1000 years. Preah Vihear Temple was built in the 9th century, worshiping Shiva – the god of destruction and creation in Hindu mythology, along with the mountain gods Sikharesvara and Bhadresvara. After that, the temple was continuously completed and rebuilt over many centuries, through about 7 kings of the old Khmer empire. The temple has Banteay Srei-style designs in the late 10th century. Most of the current structure of the temple was built under the reigns of Suryavarman I and Suryayarman II in the first half of the 11th and 12th centuries.

With such a long history, Preah Vihear Temple has been preserved intact thanks to its remote location, difficult to access, and the respect of Cambodian and Thai residents. This shows that the value of the temple lies not only in its architecture but also in its religion, as a sacred symbol, closely associated with the spiritual life and beliefs of the people in the area.

After the dispute between Cambodia and Thailand, on June 15, 1962, the World Court ruled in favor of Cambodia and required Thailand to withdraw its troops from the temple, return the relics, including the statues brought to the temple, to restore peace to this thousand-year-old sacred architecture. This action affirmed the position and importance of Preah Vihear temple with historical value and more broadly, economic value. Therefore, in 2007, Cambodia proposed to UNESCO to recognize Preah Vihear temple as a Cultural Heritage.

II. Is Preah Vihear worth it?

The layout of Preah Vihear temple is divided into three distinct levels with the temple complex running along an 800m north-south axis, and consisting of a raised causeway and steps leading to the sanctuary located on top of the southern temple area, with the elevation gradually increasing from north to south for a total of 120m. Although the structure is different from other Cambodian mountain temples found at Angkor, the temple serves the same purpose of worshipping the gods of Mount Meru.

Preah Vihear stands out with its linear layout, a design that elegantly follows the contours of the Dângrêk Mountains. Unlike the sprawling grandeur of Angkor Wat, this temple emphasizes spirituality and harmony with its natural surroundings. The intricate sandstone carvings adorning its walls are masterpieces of Khmer artistry, depicting myths and religious symbols that captivate visitors.

The Preah Vihear Temple, perched dramatically atop a cliff on the Dângrêk Mountains, offers visitors not only a stunning view but also a sense of awe at its location. From this vantage point, the temple overlooks the surrounding landscape, providing breathtaking panoramic views of Cambodia’s natural beauty.  Whether you’re a photography enthusiast or simply love soaking in nature’s beauty, the sweeping views at sunrise or sunset provide an unforgettable experience. This unique position adds to the temple’s mystique, making it a remarkable destination for those seeking both history and adventure.

Preah Vihear also holds immense cultural significance, showcasing the artistry of the Khmer Empire. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it stands as a testament to the architectural genius and spiritual devotion of ancient Cambodia. The temple’s intricate carvings and magnificent design reflect the rich cultural heritage that continues to endure in the region. For those interested in exploring the artistic and historical legacy of Cambodia, Preah Vihear offers a rare and unforgettable experience.

This is not just a temple visit—it’s a journey into history, culture, and awe-inspiring beauty. If you’re looking for a unique Khmer experience, beyond the crowds of Angkor, Preah Vihear Temple is a destination you simply cannot miss.
